FOX HUNTING

Fox Hunting or Better known as Radio Direction finding

A New Activity coming to Wayne County Amateur Radio Club

Our club has some seriously interested members that want to get involved in a fun event of fox hunting.
Many amateur radio operators are very familiar with fox hunting. Your President is a complete novice but has spent many hours researching how it’s done, and I have been building antennas for this activity that I am anxious to share.

Simply put, amateur radio fox hunting is placing a radio equipped with an omni directional antenna tuned to a specific frequency, transmitting continuously from a hidden spot placed by one of the people within the fox hunter group.
The challenge is to use radio equipment designed to capture that specific radio signal and use a compass and a map to triangulate the location of the transmitter.

It’s not a contest or a race ( well kind of) to find the fox. Rather its just a fun event to see who can locate the radio transmitter first. In doing so there are many fun things that can be associated with that winner. Mostly it’s a way to gather friends and family for a few hours and enjoy the basics of radio communication. Along with that it’s a challenge to see who comes up with the best equipment, who has a better idea of direction finding, sharing ideas to improve the sport and most of all being outdoors getting a little exercise.

No club within our area does fox hunting. We could be the first to start a trend with other area clubs, a way of uniting our amateur radio community. But that’s not my main focus. I’m looking forward to doing fun activities not focused on the usual contests we do throughout the year and including our family members as well. Socialization is an important aspect of any club. Making friends and sharing stories is one important feature of any event we do. The binding feature is we all share an important hobby.
